The Supremacy Clause Study Questions

  1. Thomas Jefferson's promise was not kept because whites wanted all the land for themselves. They also wanted all the resources in the land such as oil, wood, gold, crops etc.

  2. The Cherokee tribe became acculturated to European culture by adopting to the U.S. government, becoming Christians, and sending their children to boarding schools. They also dressed like the whites, and learned to speak their language.

  3. By 1932 Native Americans lost 90 million acres of their land which was 2/3 of the land that was reserved through laws. The Dawes Act caused much of the loss because Native Americans did not move to the allotments and the allotments were leased to non-indians, causing all the loss of land.

  4. The Nez Perce were asked to move to a reservation in 1855, and later on were asked to move again because of the discovery of gold. Chief Joseph resisted that removal and went into battle with federal troops. Captain Jack, the Modoc chief went into battle because he led people back to their traditional lands. He requested a place to live in their homeland, but was denied by the U.S government. Captain Jack was in battle for several months and later was hung after being captured.

  5. Constitutional laws in the Supremacy Clause were not granted to the Native Americans in their land disputes because Andrew Jackson and the government took the land from them by force because they wanted the resources.

  6. If I was a Native American ordered to move immediately to a place that was harsh and cold and didn't have any supplies I wouldn't follow the orders of the whites. I would try to convince whites to let us stay. I would remind them that when they first came here we treated them with respect and we helped them. I would ask them to do the same for us.
