The Impact of Fundamentalism on Human Rights

FUNDAMENTALIST-someone who follows
religious laws very strictly.
FUNDAMENTALISM-the practice of following
religious laws very strictly

I believe that the rule that states, that "females may not study at schools, universities, or any other educational institution" is the most oppresive because I believe we all deserve an education. All women should pursue their dreams if education is one of them.

I believe that the rule that states, "no burying of anyone who was killed by the Taliban. Bodies must remain in the streets as examples to other wrongdoers" is most oppressive. I believe this because it is very traumatic to see a dead body lying in the floor. Especially for children to have to see that everyday.

The Kite Runner

I am reading the book The Kite Runner and I am half way through the book. So far I like the book. It is a book that contains different main ideas. It talks about love, guilt, wealth, rape, loyalty and many more themes. It takes place in Kabul in Afghanistan. My favorite character so far is Soraya because she reminds me of myself. She loves Amir so much and his father, Baba as well. She cares for him when he is almost dying. It is a really sad story that will bring tears to your eyes.

We had our book discussion for the first half of the book and I enjoyed it more than any other discussion. I enjoyed the exercises we made it made the discussion really fun.

Cool Salsa book review

Cool Salsa is a poem with bilingual poems. These are poems of latinos/Mexicans growing up in the U.S. I liked this book but i disliked it as well. I liked it because the poems had strong messages of situations that actually happen to our people. Also i think it taught us new things. For example how we should like our skin color "brown" because god made us brown. I kind of disliked the book because a few poems were hard to understand. I didnt understand them untill we disscussed the poem as a class. The Words Alive disscussion was great. I enjoyed listening to the different points of view of every single of my classmates.

Andrew Jackson Letter

September 22, 2009

Annette Mojica
4169 Euclid Ave.
San Diego, CA 92105

Dear President Andrew Jackson,

I am writing this letter to you today, because I disagree with the Indian Removal Act. As Native American citizens we want to be able to stay in the place we were born and in the place we grew up. We want to be able to speak our language, and practice our written alphabet. We also wish to practice our own religion, we have lived at peace in our land and we want it to remain that way. We do not want to assimilate with white people. We helped and showed your people respect when they arrived and we hope you do the same with us. I hope you take my letter in consideration and do not approve the Indian Removal Act.

Sincerely,

Annette Mojica

Domestic Violence

Anger and emotional abuse is when men or women put you down. For example name calling, playing mind games, and humiliating one another. Also when he/she make each other feel bad about her or himself. I believe that anger/emotional abuse affects teenage women the most because in my opinion I think that when men call us names it hurts our feelings, or when they put us down. In my case my baby's dad and I have not only hurt each other emotionally but physically, and verbally. In one occasion he called me a bitch, i was telling him to stop, but he didn't so I started running my mouth. He tried to lock me inside my room with my son, but i started throwing everything I found around me at him. We were both really mad and just a verbal situation got to a physical one. This situation happened for two days in a row, and I regret it with all my heart because I think this is the reason god took my son away from me. I handled the verbal problem in a bad way, by going at him physically. So I advice all the girls that are in similar situations to ignore the situation at first, especially if your partner is abusive. Then whenever you get a chance to leave that man leave him! We as women deserve to be treated with respect. You do not want your child to grow up in an abusive home, where later on he/she can be an abusive parent as well.

The Supremacy Clause Study Questions

  1. Thomas Jefferson's promise was not kept because whites wanted all the land for themselves. They also wanted all the resources in the land such as oil, wood, gold, crops etc.

  2. The Cherokee tribe became acculturated to European culture by adopting to the U.S. government, becoming Christians, and sending their children to boarding schools. They also dressed like the whites, and learned to speak their language.

  3. By 1932 Native Americans lost 90 million acres of their land which was 2/3 of the land that was reserved through laws. The Dawes Act caused much of the loss because Native Americans did not move to the allotments and the allotments were leased to non-indians, causing all the loss of land.

  4. The Nez Perce were asked to move to a reservation in 1855, and later on were asked to move again because of the discovery of gold. Chief Joseph resisted that removal and went into battle with federal troops. Captain Jack, the Modoc chief went into battle because he led people back to their traditional lands. He requested a place to live in their homeland, but was denied by the U.S government. Captain Jack was in battle for several months and later was hung after being captured.

  5. Constitutional laws in the Supremacy Clause were not granted to the Native Americans in their land disputes because Andrew Jackson and the government took the land from them by force because they wanted the resources.

  6. If I was a Native American ordered to move immediately to a place that was harsh and cold and didn't have any supplies I wouldn't follow the orders of the whites. I would try to convince whites to let us stay. I would remind them that when they first came here we treated them with respect and we helped them. I would ask them to do the same for us.

Obama's Speech:My Education, My Future

My Education, My Future

1. What resonated with you from President Obama's speech? What lines or phrases do you remember?

"No one has written your destiny for you, you make your own destiny."

2. What were the three most important words in Obama's speech? What do they mean?

Obama's three most important words are education, school, and commit. I believe these words are important because if there was no education or schools there wouldn't be any Doctors to care for the sick, Police Officers to reduce crime, and Military to serve this country. We all have to commit our selfs to achieve our dreams and be somebody important in life.

3. Is Obama inspiring you to do anything? Is he challenging you to do something? What is it?

Obama inspired me to keep working hard and achieve my dreams, to keep going regardless of everything I've been through, and all rude comments that people have said about me. I want to be a Homicide Detective and I think that with his speech he gave me strength to become one.

4. Obama said, "no one has written your destiny for you, you make your own destiny." What does this quote mean to you and your life?

To me this quote means that nobody is leading you in life, that we lead ourselves whether it's for the worst or the best. We choose the way our life goes nobody is making you do it a certain way.

5. Obama stressed the importance of working hard in school and contributing to your country. He also asked, "What's your contribution going to be? What problems are you going to solve?" How would you answer this question if you were conversing with Mr. Obama?

My contribution to this country is to help, and serve for it. I will find criminals, and try to reduce that kind of crime.

I am strong and hardworking.

I understand my baby is in a better place.

I dream of having my son and boyfriend next to me.

Words Alive Discussion

Words Alive Discussion-A Piece of Cake
I liked A Piece of Cake because it taught me different things about life. One main thing that I learned is that every single one of us think we have it hard on ourselves, but there are people that have it worst. A second thing that i learned is that even though life is hard you gotta keep going, and try to overcome any obstacles. I admire Cupcake Brown because she went through a lot and eventually became a lawyer. I didn't think that she was going to straighten up, but she did. If she could do it, everybody can!
What I enjoyed about the discussion most (besides the cupcakes), was when all the group picked a passage in the book that they enjoyed and read it out loud and explained why they liked it. I really enjoyed the book and probably that's why I enjoyed the discussion.

Manifest Destiny and Ethnocentrism

Manifest Destiny and Ethnocentrism
Why can we say that there was cultural diversity in America even before the white people arrived?

There were different cultural diversities among the different tribes all over America. Different tribes had different diets depending where they lived. They spoke different languages, had different skin tones, different dress code, and habitats. They also had different beliefs about god as well.

Give two examples of how the Native Americans and Europeans experienced acculturation?

Indians and Europeans experienced acculturation by sharing food, firearms, fur, tools, and horses.

Describe how Native Americans and Europeans had different ways of looking at how the land should be used and shared.

Native Americans thought the land should be shared among all people. They believed there was no such thing as private property. The Europeans believed in all the legal documents and that they gave rights to own the land based on religious beliefs.

Explain why the idea of Manifest Destiny is an example of ethnocentrism.

Manifest Destiny is an example of ethnocentrism because it made Europeans believe that god wanted them to own all the land from coast to coast. They didn't care what other believed or wanted.

How do you believe American history would have been different if Phillip/ Pometacomet or Tecumseh had been successful in their plans?

Eating Etiquette

  • Chopsticks- a pair of equal size sticks used to eat in Japan, Korea, Vietnam, Taiwan, China

  • Believed that it originated in China and are made out of bamboo or plastic.
First you take the chopstick out of the wrapper. Hold the chopsticks as if you
were holding a pencil, using you forefinger, middle finger, and thumb. Slip your middle finger between both chopsticks. One stick will rest between the thumb and fore finger, the other will rest in your middle finger, and you will use your finger to move it.

To eat soup using chopsticks you pick up your bowl and sip from the side of the bowl, dip your chopsticks to pick up pieces of thin curd or seaweed.

When eating noodles, if served in a hot broth alternate from picking up the noodles and sipping on the broth.

NOTE: Slurping when you eat is okay in Japan, it shows you are enjoying your meal with pleasure.

Drinking Etiquette

When drinking in a Japanese bar, customers pour drinks to each other from bottles of beer. customers also reciprocate (buy each other their drinks). When you are drinking in a group, you have to wait until everyone is served. After everyone has their drink everyone shouts Kampai (cheers).

If you are drinking sake and somebody offers you to drink some from their bottle, you have to finish whats in your cup and then hold it out. As well as the beer it's good to reciprocate.

What is sake?

Sake is a clear liquid made out of rice and water that is kind of sweet, and contains 15% alcohol. Sake can be drank hot or cold. Hot sake is called Atzucan and cold sake is called Hiyazake. You might want to watch your drinking.

2)What message is the author trying to tell the readers? (theme) What does this message mean to you?
The message the author is trying to tell us is that family is what you make it. Your family doesn't necessarly need to be your actual parents, it can be whoever you make your parents.

What does the "Secret Life of Bees" have to do with racism?

1) The Secret Life of Bees has to do with racism because of the Civil Rights Movement was being passed. The civil Rights Movement was being approved to stop segregation. In the book white people treated the colored people badly because of their colored skin.

2)I can relate Lily's experience with racism because many people see us teenage moms in a bad way because we are young mothers having babies.

3) I can relate a moment in my life to something that happened to me in my doctors office. I think they treated me differently than another patient. i think she treate dthe other young lay with more respect!
